The renowned Flying Flea, a nimble 125cc two-stroke motorcycle that gained recognition in World War II, is to be resurrected!

Once prized for its manoeuvrability and dependability, Royal Enfield plans to keep these core values as it revives this legendary name, not just as an homage, but what looks like a sub-brand for its range of electric motorcycles.

Royal Enfield, a brand renowned for its classic motorcycles, is accelerating into the electric era with this latest initiative. The Flying Flea electric concept signifies a fusion of vintage aesthetics with cutting-edge technology, marking a pivotal moment in the brand’s history. This move underscores the company’s commitment to embracing sustainable mobility while honouring its heritage.

Qualcomm Partnership

Flying Flea motor and grill design

At the heart of the new Flying Flea lies a partnership with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a leader in semiconductor and telecommunications equipment. By integrating Qualcomm’s Snapdragon QWM2290 System-on-Chip (SoC) and Car-to-Cloud Platform, Royal Enfield aims to equip its electric motorcycles with advanced connectivity features. Riders can anticipate real-time diagnostics, sophisticated navigation systems, ride customisation options, and remote interfacing capabilities via smartphones. This ensures that the Flying Flea offers a riding experience that is technologically advanced, and hopefully user-friendly.

Nimish Shrivastava, senior director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. said,

“Connected services are fundamentally transforming the 2-wheeler market, which [will] enhance the safety and convenience."

The design of the Flying Flea pays homage to Royal Enfield’s rich legacy. The motorcycle features a retro-inspired aesthetic, blending classic design elements with modern engineering. The up-front cooling fins capture that legacy and really work for this style. This approach should not only appeal to long-time enthusiasts but also attract a new generation of riders seeking eco-friendly alternatives without compromising on style.

What's the Verdict?

A name like Royal Enfield is hard to ignore. Their venture into the electric vehicle (EV) segment is a move to balance innovation with tradition. The company seems to recognize the growing demand for e-moto and is poised to deliver products that resonate with its brand ethos. By leveraging Qualcomm’s technological expertise, Royal Enfield hopes that its electric motorcycles will enhance the overall riding experience. This paired with their design philosophy could easily position them as leaders in the rapidly advancing sector. Of course, like most things, it's in the delivery. Currently their C6 website is mostly fluff about sky diving and feeling free. I'll be watching closely for the full specification and to see how the FFC6 is received. For now though, it looks class and I like it.
